چکیده

We propose to use Markov regenerative process (MRGP) models to study the availability of Internet-based services perceived by a Web user, which capture the interactions between the service facility and the user. The necessity of the sophisticated MRGP modeling is evidenced by the comparisons with the corresponding continuous time Markov chain (CTMC) models, which show that the popular convenient CTMC models tend to overestimate user-perceived service unavailabilities by 26% to 125%. We study two different online service scenarios: (1) singleuser-single-host and (2) single-user-multiple-host. It is found that user-perceived service unavailability depends not only on the infrastructure’s failure-recovery characteristics but also, more importantly, on the user’s behavior. Also, for a service provider, to improve users’ satisfaction, inventing a fast recovery mechanism is more effective than striving for a more reliable platform given the platform availability is the same.

User-Perceived Availability and Response-Time in Voting-Based Replicated Systems: A Case Study

In this paper, we develop a modeling method based on stochastic Petri nets (SPN) to allow user-perceived measures in voting-based replicated systems to be estimated. The merit of our approach is that user-arrival, maintenance, and node/link-failure or -repair processes are fully decoupled, thus allowing us to remove some unnecessary modeling assumptions and also to keep track of states in which...

pmx Webserver: A User Friendly Interface for Alchemistry

With the increase of available computational power and improvements in simulation algorithms, alchemical molecular dynamics based free energy calculations have developed into routine usage. To further facilitate the usability of alchemical methods for amino acid mutations, we have developed a web based infrastructure for obtaining hybrid protein structures and topologies. The presented webserve...

A User-Perceived Availability Evaluation of a Web Based Travel Agency

A hierarchical modeling framework for the dependability evaluation of Internet-based applications is presented and illustrated on a travel agency example. Modeling is carried out considering four levels, namely: user, function, service and resource levels. The first level describes how the users invoke the application and the three remaining levels detail how the user requests are handled by th...

Dispatcher Based Dynamic Load Balancing on Web Server System

Use of Internet and frequent accesses of large amount of multimedia data are fast increasing the traffic of network. Performance evaluation and high availability of server are important factor to resolve this problem using various cluster based systems. There are several low-cost servers using the load sharing cluster system which are connected to high speed network, and apply load balancing te...

Modeling of Online Service Availability Perceived by Web Users

While the Internet and the World-Wide-Web (WWW)-based online services expand at an unprecedented pace, the Web users are still experiencing a high level of unavailability. Paralleling the effort of identifying the failure-recovery behaviors of the underlying supporting infrastructure, attention has also been paid to Web users’ behaviors. However, a link between the two research directions seems...
